John V. Frangioni, M.D., Ph.D.
CEO
Dr. Frangioni is an internationally renowned expert in molecular imaging and image-guided surgery. His R&D laboratory focuses on the development of novel medical devices and disease-specific contrast agents for diagnosing and treating cancer and other diseases. Dr. Frangioni is inventor of FLARE® intraoperative near-infrared fluorescence imaging systems, which use invisible light to find tumors, blood vessels, lymph nodes, and nerves during surgery. His laboratory has also developed numerous cancer- and disease-specific contrast agents for use with FLARE®. Independent research groups have tested the technology in over 750 patients in 5 countries, where it has been shown to have an enormous potential to improve human surgery.
Dr. Frangioni has been the Principal Investigator of 19 peer-reviewed research grants from the National Institutes of Health totaling $55M dollars. He has published over 200 peer-reviewed publications, resulting in 16,000 citations, an impact factor of 66, and an h-index of 50.
Dr. Frangioni is the recipient of several awards including Mentor of the Year at Harvard Medical School and the Edward M. Kennedy Award for Healthcare Innovation, and he has been inducted into the American Society for Clinical Investigation. He has also been a Visiting Professor of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Dr. Frangioni received his undergraduate degree in Engineering Sciences from Harvard College. He received his M.D. from Harvard Medical School and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology’s Health Science and Technology (HST) Program, and his Ph.D. in Cellular and Molecular Physiology from Harvard Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. He completed an internal medicine residency at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and a medical oncology fellowship at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center. He has been board certified in internal medicine and medical oncology, and was an Attending Physician in the Division of Hematology/Oncology at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.
